Programme Overview:

  • What? A free, three-day intensive course designed for new writers wanting to explore art criticism, offered by Frieze.
  • Where? Vienna, Austria.
  • When? Thursday, April 4 to Saturday, April 6, 2024.

Key Dates:

  • Deadline for Submissions: Midnight (CET), Friday, February 16, 2024. Late submissions won’t be considered.
  • Notification: Selected participants will be informed by March 5, 2024.

Eligibility:

  • Aspiring arts writers from Austria, Germany, or Switzerland.
  • Over the age of 18.
  • Published no more than three pieces of art writing in English.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Workshops on pitching, interview techniques, and crafting profiles/reviews.
  • Gallery and studio visits for insider insights into the art scene.
  • Your work edited by Frieze editors with a chance to be featured on frieze.com.
  • Expenses covered, including travel, accommodation, and food.

Application Requirements:

  • An unpublished piece of writing (no longer than 350 words) in English, reviewing a recent art exhibition or artwork.
  • A 150-word statement about why you’re applying and what you hope to gain from the course.

Selection Process:

  • The Frieze editorial team and a representative from Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art (www.phileas.art) will select participants.
