From Photography to Collage: Bitaem’s Self-Taught Web3 Journey

This is the third installment in .ART’s “Web3 Women’s Revolution” series, honoring Women’s History Month and exploring woman-identifying artists in the Web3 space. Bitaem (bitaemm.art/) is a self-taught artist who sells her collage work on-chain. In this interview, she discusses how she got into collage from photography and the lessons she’s learned along her journey into Web3. This interview was edited for length and clarity.

Describe yourself in 3 words. Go:

Warrior, creative, compassionate

Let’s start with the basics: how did you get into art?

My artistic journey began in childhood, solidifying with photography, progressing to Photoshop and photomontage, and culminating in my current focus on collage.

Tell us about collage: what draws you to it? What is the power of collage?

The inherent flexibility of collage, unbound by prescribed rules, allows for the incorporation of limitless details and the construction of entirely new visual worlds. Its power lies in its capacity to communicate diverse messages through symbolic lines and shapes, presenting a multifaceted puzzle for the viewer to decipher.

You say your art is inspired by your “living environment”. How so?

Environmental factors significantly influence personality development throughout life.  Societal and cultural contexts establish foundational personality traits, which are further refined through personal study and research in adulthood. However, daily experiences remain my primary source of inspiration.

How did you get into Web3?

My introduction to Web3 was fortuitous, stemming from a referral by a valued friend, and I have since pursued that diligently.  I have also had the privilege of collaborating with exceptional artists, from whom I continue to gain valuable insights.

Which artist in history would you have wished to see on blockchain?

The freedom and beauty inherent in Jean-Michel Basquiat’s artwork consistently captivates my attention.

Any advice for people looking to get into Web3? Any words for those who are hesitant?

This platform transcends geographical limitations, offering global artists unparalleled networking opportunities and exposure to diverse artistic perspectives, thereby enriching creative output.  Exposure to various international cultures is also a significant benefit. While embracing new challenges can be daunting, the potential rewards warrant exploration.

What’s the one question you hate getting asked the most as an artist?

Is it financially worth it to work so hard? I love art because of the mental freedom it gives me and I can spend hours on it.

What’s one benefit of having a .ART domain?

A .ART domain effectively distinguishes your business or organization within the competitive Web3 landscape, providing valuable assistance to artists.

Anything else you wish to discuss?

Just want to say: follow your dreams doesn’t matter where part of this world you are there is always a light in the way.

Bitaem uses her .ART domain to direct to her HUG profile, streamlining audience access. Register your .ART domain and use it for your portfolio or connect it to your Web3 assets today: https://get.art
