Here’s a list of five female artists who are leading the art charge in 2024.  

Hayv Kahraman

Hayv Kahraman is an Iraqi painter whose work meditates on migrant consciousness. Reflecting on her own nomadic background, one that includes seeking refuge in Europe and then in the United States, Kahraman’s work is a fearless confrontation of identity and place. Drawing from microbial research, her art presents poetic abstractions of how one processes trauma, feelings of being displaced, and feelings of being “othered”.  

Valerie Etitinwo

Nigerian-Swiss artist Valerie Etitinwo is an abstract figurative painter whose work embraces beauty and imperfection. Her art is layered, busy, dynamic, and leaves a lasting impression on its viewers. Embracing the flat awkwardness of her human figures, Etitinwo creates a distinct, colorful world of her own, one viewers will be happy to revel in.

Courtney Simone

Simone finds art in the everyday; lounging at home and taking a walk serve as great sources of inspiration for this abstract artist. It is her visual interpretation of the quotidian that makes her art—which focuses on the ordinary—into something truly memorable. Bringing to fruition the very joy of life, Simone imbues the world with impeccable color and imagination. 

Sarah Svetlana

Investigating the nuances of the human condition, Svetlana’s art is at the cross section of beautiful and interrogative. Herself a Soviet refugee brought up in Los Angeles, Svetlana’s early life was heavily marked by a search for identity. Her work is the product of this exploration. Her pieces are largely faceless, pointing to the deeper complexities of what identity might mean and what knowing your identity might feel like.  

Fidan Bagirova

Fidan Bagirova values peace and joy, both of which are at the center of her metal flora sculptures. At a distance, her sculptures are magnificent, colorful explosions, but upon close inspection, one will find the metal beaten and smashed. Her series “Voyage En Fleurs” thus evokes the fragility of human experience and its simultaneously perennial state of blossom.
