The Art Of Jewellery; Shiny, Precious and Stylish

Featured image: Archive photographs of Coco Chanel showcase in Vogue Chanel Mademoiselle Exhibit Film realised by Sofia Coppola

Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of art that exist, as the first form of jewellery that exists wasn’t created by human as we know but by its predecessor the Neanderthal, living in Europe. They created beads out of small seashells. The first materials were all coming from nature – stones, shells, marble, ostrich egg and even mammoth tusk, and far from the one that is displayed on the runway today. The evolution of jewellery, in its techniques, craftsmanship and material has evolved tremendously through centuries of refining this art form. What hasn’t changed much is that a lot of jewellers finds their inspiration in nature.

Men and women are also loving their jewellery no matter if they are a sign of power, a protector or sign of faith, a dowery, pushing forward an individual’s fashion sense, making a statement or bringing more life into a plain outfit. Countries and epoch have used the power of jewellery to showcase their history and their belief – they have been the cause of many disputes between Kings (and Queens) and Kingdoms, or sisters or today’s celebrities. From Marie-Antoinette to Coco Chanel or Kate Middleton, from Maharaja to the Met Gala, jewellery is an art form that has been wear for centuries and that is still evolving today to integrate the state of the art technologies.

Jewellery: personal trinket that can be highly valuable due to the material – precious metal and/or jewel – they are made from or for sentimental value.  Necklaces, rings, earring or bracelets are the most common ornaments produced but these decorative pieces also include cufflinks, pendant and brooches.

Victoria Bulgakova

Work in progress on one necklace

Her journey through life is central to her work, her adaptability, her failures and success, as well as her experience of being a first-generation immigrant, can be found in her jewellery. In it you can find a focus on the inquiry of belonging, malleability and cope with the unknown of what the piece will be at the end – will it shrink, bent, thinning. Through the process of jewellery and object making, I am exploring what can become of a material matter if the context it originally belonged to and the substance it consists of are reinvented.

Her work can be discovered on Instagram under @victoria.bulgakova and her website victoriabulgakova.art
