Hey World, Happy Museum Day!
With museum giants like Guggenheim, Louvre, Tate and The J. Paul Getty Museum at the hem of the .ART community, our team would like to share some fun facts from museum history (more exciting than it sounds we promise!) and updates from other remarkable adopters.
Astonishing fact №1
There are more museums in the U.S. than there are Starbucks and McDonald’s combined. Ouf! That’s a relief!
Astonishing fact № 2
The largest (and still unresolved) art heist in history was completed in 1990 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, totalling 13 paintings worth $500M. To this day, all of the empty frames are still hanging, acting as placeholders until the pieces are returned, and the (strange) wish of Stewart Gardner that nothing is changed in the museum – ever… Just a reminder to keep your provenance in check! (This is why you should look into our .ART Digital Twin)
Astonishing fact № 3
The world’s oldest museum was built by a Babylonian princess 2500 years ago in modern-day Iraq. Ennigaldi lived in the 6th century BCE and was a forward-thinking woman with three careers: a high priestess, a priestess school administrator, and a museum curator. Princess Ennigaldi’s collection of meticulously labelled objects contained wonders and artefacts as ancient to her as the fall of the Roman Empire is to us. It’s easy to forget that ancient peoples also studied history – Babylonians were able to look back on millennia of previous human experience.
And now, closer to modern-day…
MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome | maxxi.art | is the first Italian national institution devoted to contemporary creativity. Always at the edge of social and political themes, the museum has recently inaugurated an exhibition with a rarely appropriate hashtag – #BiggerThanMyself. Marking a new chapter in the research dedicated to the Middle East and the Mediterranean area, “Heroic Voices from ex-Yugoslavia” studies the trauma of the Civil War and the rise of nationalism in opposition to multi-ethnicity. Over 50 artists, including Marina Abramović | mai.art|, Nika Autor and Maja Bajević took part in taking a hard look at the history of the area through a contemporary lens.
LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art | lacma.art| is the largest art museum in the western United States. The statement made by the architecture of its building will make a lasting impression as much as the more 142 000 objects into their collection. Noteworthy fact, LACMAC is committed to showcasing a multitude of art histories both from a cultural and a historical angle. They are well versed in experimentation and pushing further the boundaries of what art can and can’t be, reflecting on crucial subject matter for artists for centuries back and to come.
The Tel Aviv Museum of Art | tamuseum.art | is a leading institution as well as Israel’s first art museum – it was opened in 1932. Your experience will be greatly influenced by which entrance you use when entering it, from the original main building to the brutalist extension of the 1970s and the 2011 extension. One thing will remain the same, the wonders inside will amaze you from Modigliani to Klimt to Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe or Christian Marclay the Clock – your interest will definitely be sparked and proved that this museum won’t shy away from controversies in the art, current trends and celebrating international and Israeli art!
The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts | pushkinmuseum.art | is the largest museum of European art in Moscow and also one of .ART’s first partnering institutions. A few years back .ART’s creative team has curated a ”Director’s cabinet” project and has been continuously supporting the museum’s efforts in digital innovation.

Meanwhile, the Multimedia Art Museum of Moscow | mamm.art | is getting ready for the “Art of the Future” festival that will be launched in partnership with .ART Domains as an innovation partner in the coming fall.
“Since the very launch of .ART, we have been in close communication and are grateful for this long-standing partnership. Together MAMM and .ART have launched exhibitions, charity programs and auction events. When it comes to the .ART team, there is always space to come up with new ideas.” – The team at Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow
Finally, this year, the MacKenzie Art | mackenzie.art| made history more than once. The nomination of John G. Hampton as the director means that out is the first time that an Indigenous person is at the head of a major public art space in Canada. They are also at the forefront of bridging art and technology with their Minecraft residency program. We can’t wait to see what else the MacKenzie Art Gallery will pull out of its vault. We are very proud that they have adopted a .ART to showcase their forward-thinking museum.
From smaller regional museums to large internationally renowned institution, museums are a significant part of the gatekeeping of humankind legacy. We can’t wait to see how in a post-pandemic world, they will be evolving, hoping for more diversity, more accessibility and equity sharing multiple narratives.
